About Dutch Gags
These Multi Ring bits belong to the Lever category of bitting, although they are frequently referred to as “gags”, which they are not. Any bit with the reins attached to a section of the cheek that extends below the mouthpiece will as the contact is taken up, create a lever effect. With the bit’s mouthpiece acting as the fulcrum to this action, as the bit’s cheeks rotate, it will bring a downwards pressure upon the poll through the bridle and also upon the mouth. The reaction to this by the horse is to encourage the head and neck downwards. Rather like a Pelham but with no curb chain.
