DRIVING BITS

About Driving Bits

There are many designs of driving bits but generally they can be divided between; Liverpool, Buxton, Elbow and Butterfly Pelham bits and the Wilson Snaffle. All of these are available in a wide range of mouthpieces to accommodate the requirements of the individual horse.

Driving bits will have just one set of reins attached to the bit with perhaps the addition of a Bearing Rein. Being driven, the horse will not have the aids from the rider’s legs and seat.

HOW ARE YOUR DRIVING BITS MEASURED?

The diagram on the right shows you how we measure our bits. For the Liverpool we just need the mouth width and the number of slots. The bit width is especially important to get right. Don't forget we can do mouth piece sizes to the nearest 1/4" so you can be sure to get the right size.
