D BITS

About D Bits

The D bit or Dee Cheek as they are also referred to, are a member of the Snaffle family. Often seen in racing when a slightly larger external D shaped ring would be used. A halfway house between an Eggbutt and a Full Cheek, the Dee has a short length of metal that protrudes both above and below the mouthpiece. The top and bottom of this are attached by joints to the loop that forms the outer rings of the bit. These allow the bit’s cheeks to move freely and give the distinctive “D” shape from which it is named. Normally the Dee cheeks will be made for Stainless Steel even if the mouthpiece is of another alloy or material.
