Pelhams

The Pelham bit on a horse, pony or donkey combines the action of a snaffle bit and a curb bit..  By riding your horse with two pairs of reins you can ride most of the time with the snaffle with light hands but engage more control with the curb action if your horse is strong and runs away a little.

As such it works in a similar way to the double bridle.  A curb chain is recommended and we provide them as standard with your pelham order.

We can add a variety of different types of mouth piece to our Pelhams to suit your needs. We can make thick or thinner gauge mouth pieces in stainless steel, sweet iron, copper or brass. The mouth can be arched, tilted, with different joints and also with different extras such as rollers or nagbutts to help keep the tongue from going over the bit.

If you cannot see the type you are looking for the chances are we can still make it. So either give us a call, fill in the contact form or make our purchase specifying the change you need in the box below.

The diagram on the left shows you how we measure our pelhams.  We ask you to provide the cheek length in the order form below which measures from the top of the ring to the foot of the cheek not including the bottom ring. 

We make the purchase and the lower cheek of our pelhams in proportion based on the cheek size you require.  We do extended top version of our bits if you want longer purchases.

The bit width is especially important to get right.  Don't forget we can do mouth piece sizes to the nearest 1/4" so you can be sure to get the right size.

Then you simply need to provide the mouth width and the cheek size in inches or in cms. Please look at the measurements tab on this page to confirm how we measure our Pelhams. Don't panic if you get it wrong, you can always send the bit back to us and we can fine tune the size for you.
